Vishwakarma Puja at an Armed Force Camp

Lord Vishwakarma is the divine craftsman, architect and engineer who created the universe, earth and heaven. He is also known for creating weapons including the ‘Vajra’, the sacred weapon of Lord Indra.

Vishwakarma Puja is a unique festival to honour Bhagavan Vishvakarma, the ‘Architect of Gods.’ Its date is determined as per the luni-solar calendar, like most of  the other festivals in the Sanatana Vedic dharma. Thus, Vishvakarma pooja is traditionally celebrated on the eleventh date of the bright half of the Bhadrapada month and the date almost remains the same every year in mid-September. This year, the day of Vishwakarma Puja  is being observed on  Friday, the 17th of September.

On this day all the professionals, architects, artisans and the engineering community worship Lord Vishwakarma as the deity of their craft and trade. They all pray for the smooth functioning and working of their tools and for achieving excellence and quality in their profession.

This day is even celebrated by the soldier in uniform, as a day for invoking the blessings of  Lord  Vishwakarma. The Forces perform a puja wherein their tools, Information and Communication Technology systems, arms, ammunition, electronic equipment, machinery and vehicles are worshipped. Tying of the sacred thread on the wrists and applying vermilion tilak on the forehead of all the personnel helps in creating a sense of purity and happiness.

This practice of praying together regardless of caste, creed or religion inculcates a wonderful sense of belongingness.  Such unique practices even today, instill a spirit of bonding, provide moral direction, spiritual assurance and are a great means of Force cohesion. They not only motivate the personnel but also unite them in fulfilling their duty towards the nation. Here are some photos of Vishvakarma Puja from the set-up of a para-miltary organization; from its three locations-the Communication Unit, Motor transport Unit and Masonry Unit.
